A letter from our President

Dear Friend of the Mathews Memorial Library,

Let me begin by thanking you for your past support which has helped us to continue to fund the programs and services that make the Library the true heart of our Mathews Community.

The Friends of the Mathews Memorial Library, Inc. is a Section 501(c) nonprofit whose primary function is to promote and support the Mathews Memorial Library by sponsoring programs, purchasing needed equipment, and fulfilling the other requests of the Library Director and the staff.  The Friends, when called upon to aid in the capital expansion of the library, assumed full responsibility for the planning, fund-raising, and construction of the H. Bland Hudgins Wing which opened in Spring, 2014.  Past capital expansions have seen the Friends be a leader in fundraising.   We are foremost advocates of the Library and for what it stands.  While county and state funding provide for the operation and staffing of our Library, we, the Friends, seek to assist by funding special needs which otherwise might not be provided.

Activities being supported by the Friends this year include the Summer Children's Program, the Highland Games for youths, the Summer Sounds concert series, the annual dictionary program for children, and the sponsorship of high school students on Virginia Museum of Fine Arts bus trips.  In addition, the Friends are providing the funding for the renovations of the restrooms in the John Warren Cooke Conference Center.  To enhance the Library Courtyard, the Friends have provided the funding for the purchase and installation of the water fountain in the Library Courtyard as well as adding other planters.

The Friends of the Library mission is also to promote reading.  This year the Friends are donating a book to each of the fourth graders at Lee-Jackson Elementary School upon promotion to the fifth grade.  Included with the book will be a bookmark listing books which are available at the Mathews Memorial Library.  Grades K-4 at Lee-Jackson Elementary School will each be given a set of level readers for use in that grade.  Our committee has worked with the Mathews Library Staff and the Mathews School System in making these gifts of books.

I hope that you will take a moment to consider making an annual tax-deductible donation to the Friends of the Mathew Memorial Library, Inc. so that we can continue to support our Library and literacy county-wide.  Your gift will promote education and will benefit all of our citizens, young and old.  You will also receive an annual membership with your donation.

Please mail your contribution to:

Thank you in advance for your support.  It means a great deal to our community.

Sincerely,

FOL President
